  • Do You Still Want To Come to the Prayer Summit? You CAN!!!

Steve and I are getting very excited for the Prayer Summit! There is still time for you to register, so I am posting the retreat info one more time to make sure it is easy for you to find the info you need! Just email or fb me if you would like to come. You can register and pay when you get here Friday night!

    “Called to Pray”

James 5:16 “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”

My vision for the Prayer Summits is to mix group times of study and sharing with times of prayer. It will be a prayer retreat where we actually pray! We will learn together, and then put what we have learned into practice! As we weave facts with faith and knowledge with practice, my hope is that you will see what it means to talk to God, and let him talk to you. Your faith will grow as you put feet to your faith. You will leave the Prayer Summit more confident of your personal calling, your particular prayer assignment and your unique place in God’s kingdom work.

God has called you to be a prayer warrior. God has given you unique gifts and your own unique window on the world. He uses those things to equip you for effective prayer. I want to help you to understand what your personal prayer calling is all about. The better we understand ourselves, the better we can lean into the unique calling or prayer assignment that God has given each of us.

“Is that God’s voice?” Sometimes we lack confidence in prayer because we don’t recognize God’s character or his ways. The more we understand his heart, his plan and purposes for his world the more we are able to walk with him between that which is, and that which can be.

Remember what James says in James 5:16? “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” We want our prayers to be effective. Knowing our gifts and prayer callings can help us focus in and become the effective prayer warriors that God says we can be.

We are called to pray. I am inviting you to become more effective in that calling.

The R&BT Prayer Summit will be held here on Norwegian Ridge in Western Wisconsin on September 24-25, 2010. It is time to pray. Will you join me?

  • Story of God's Provision - "Before they call, he will answer"Isaiah 65:24

Here is the story that someone emailed me that illustrates so well how our all knowing and all powerful God provides what we need before we even know we need it. And pay attention to this, friends - most often he provides for those needs through people like you and me who are willing to be used "for such a time as this"!

This is a story written by a doctor who worked in Africa. One night I had worked hard to help a mother in the labor ward; but in spite of all we could do, she died, leaving us with a tiny, premature baby and a crying two-year-old daughter. We would have difficulty keeping the baby alive; as we had no incubator (we had no electricity to run an incubator).

We also had no special feeding facilities. Although we lived on the equator, nights were often chilly with treacherous drafts. One student midwife went for the box we had for such babies and the cotton wool that the baby would be wrapped in.

Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a hot water bottle. She came back shortly in distress to tell me that in filling the bottle, it had burst (rubber perishes easily in tropical climates)..

'And it is our last hot water bottle!' she exclaimed. As in the West, it is no good crying over spilled milk, so in  Central Africa it might be considered no good crying over burst water bottles. They do not grow on trees, and there are no drugstores down forest pathways.

'All right,' I said, 'put the baby as near the fire as you safely can, and sleep between the baby and the door to keep it free from drafts Your job is to keep the baby warm.'

The following noon, as I did most days, I went to have prayers with any of the orphanage children who chose to gather with me. I gave the youngsters various suggestions of things to pray about and told them about the tiny baby. I explained our problem about keeping the baby warm enough, mentioning the hot water bottle, and that the baby could so easily die if it got chills. I also told them of the two-year-old sister, crying because her mother had died.

During prayer time, one ten -year-old girl, Ruth, prayed with the usual blunt conciseness of our African children. 'Please, God' she prayed, 'Send us a hot water bottle today It'll be no good tomorrow, God, as the baby will be dead, so please send it this afternoon.'

While I gasped inwardly at the audacity of the prayer, she added, 'And while You are about it, would You please send a dolly for the little girl so she'll know You really love her?'

As often with children's prayers, I was put on the spot. Could I honestly say 'Amen?' I just did not believe that God could do this.

Oh, yes, I know that He can do everything; the Bible says so. But there are limits, aren't there? The only way God could answer this particular prayer would be by sending me a parcel from the homeland. I had been in  Africa  for almost four years at that time, and I had never, ever, received a parcel from home.

Anyway, if anyone did send me a parcel, who would put in a hot water bottle? I lived on the equator!

Halfway through the afternoon, while I was teaching in the nurses' training school, a message was sent that there was a car at my front door. By the time I reached home, the car had gone, but there on the veranda was a large 22-pound parcel. I felt tears pricking my eyes. I could not open the parcel alone, so I sent for the orphanage children.. Together we pulled off the string, carefully undoing each knot. We folded the paper, taking care not to tear it unduly Excitement was mounting. Some thirty or forty pairs of eyes were focused on the large cardboard box. From the top, I lifted out brightly-colored, knitted jerseys. Eyes sparkled as I gave them out. Then there were the knitted bandages for the leprosy patients, and the children looked a little bored.. Then came a box of mixed raisins and sultanas - that would make a batch of buns for the weekend.

Then, as I put my hand in again, I felt the.....could it really be? I grasped it and pulled it out. Yes, a brand new, rubber hot water bottle. I cried. I had not asked God to send it; I had not truly believed that He could.

Ruth was in the front row of the children. She rushed forward, crying out, 'If God has sent the bottle, He must have sent the dolly, too!'

Rummaging down to the bottom of the box, she pulled out the small, beautifully-dressed dolly. Her eyes shone! She had never doubted!

looking up at me, she asked, 'Can I go over with you and give this dolly to that little girl, so she'll know that Jesus really loves her?'

    'Of course,' I replied!

That parcel had been on the way for five whole months, packed up by my former Sunday school class, whose leader had heard and obeyed God's prompting to send a hot water bottle, even to the equator.

And one of the girls had put in a dolly for an African child - five months before, in answer to the believing prayer of a ten-year-old to bring it 'that afternoon.'

'Before they call, I will answer.' (Isaiah 65:24)

Isn't that a wonderful encouragement to trust God, Friends? and listen to him, and obey him and serve him, and love him.... Be an Esther, Daniel, David or your best YOU this week! love in Christ, Joan Tyvoll

  • Enough Rain

It started raining last night around 10 pm or so (we were sleeping) but by midnight we were wide awake as a Thunderstorm started rumbling, blowing and RAINING. And it rained and rained and rained... We ended up with 4.3 inches, our neighbor's gauge overflowed past 5...Menomonie got over 5... Wow. All my flowers look like drowned rats this morning, and I am just going to wait for a bit before I go look at the beans (my husband calls one of the bean towers "The Leaning Tower of Beanza") I hate to turn down rain, especially after such a dry few years, but it seems like we should be getting caught up. In my record book we had 6 inches in June, 6 inches in July and it is only August 11 and we have over 6...

It is supposed to be hot and muggy again today with temps (heat index where they add the dewpoint to "feels like") over 100 degrees F. Thank goodness for Air conditioning.

We were awake a good share of last night, listening to it rain and reminiscing about the first summer here. Our lawn was hydroseeded that day, that night it rained 4.5 inches. We lived in the MUD SEA all that summer. When we lived in Eden Valley Minnesota back in 1982 maybe, a thunderstorm stuck over head and we got over 10 inches of rain. There was major flooding all over - roads washed out, crops ruined. Thankfully it eventually did stop raining here last night!

  • Where Did July GO???

It is already August, and it feels like a really old fashioned July/AUgust with heat and humidity. We have been on a cycle of weather that seems to be operative again at the end of this week - we are heating up, dew points are rising, and will culminate (so they say) with some storms, cool down, and there we go again. That is okay, I certainly prefer this to January weather!

Our "Sunday Quiet" was so much fun. It is amazing to know that all over the woods, trails, and garden there are people praying, reading and getting tight with God. Love it. I am going to do the Quiet prayer days on a regular basis, so folks can count on them, and add them into their schedules.

I had an interesting conversation again yesterday with a young woman who knew me in my pastoring days. She wanted to know what I was up to so I was explaining the R&BT retreat ministry, website etc... and as always I add the fact that I am a certified Life Coach. As it usually happens, someone listening in said "I need a Life Coach". Well, true. I believe everyone does need a life coach! It is folly to keep doing things the same way over and over, ending with the same outcome, without finally stopping and saying... there has to be a better way!

We are going to do some projects around the garden and yard today... more heat and humidity on the way!
